Mizz Fortune "No promises, darling..."
She responded as she maneuvered herself, albeit trickily to the booth in the corner, spindly fingers rubbing at her temples. Coffee right now sounded like the cure for cancer and she desperately needed it.
Mizz Fortune "I still want to know what in God's name possessed you to approach me of all vixens like this."
She says while finally settling into the seat.

The old man was practically at home in a place like this. Surrounded by food dripping with fat and butter, various personalities from the highway stopping to catch a bite before they continue down the road, and fat little waitresses tired of their shit.
Doc Hammer: Somethin' ya mentioned earlier ... bout bein' different from the rest. I been in the business a long time, spent plenty of years on the roads in almost every city in this damn country. And 95% of the women tend to be the same. All of 'em too damn young and pourin' their double D's on outta everythin' they wear. Was fun when I was a few decades younger ... hell, it's still fun now, I suppose ...
His face scrunches up a bit, having momentarily lost the point he was trying to make before getting it back once again.
Doc Hammer: Truth is, anytime I seen ya before, you were surrounded by a buncha crazies and clowns ... figured you was one of them deep down. But when our paths crossed a few weeks back, I saw somethin' different when I looked at ya. Somebody that's maybe a little lonely. And hell, I been there ... unfortunately, I ain't the most tactful guy so askin' ya out for a beer was about the best I could do then.
He gestures towards the rest of the restaurant, though not necessarily to the few people currently staring at the two.
Doc Hammer: Just thought maybe you could use a friend, is all ...

Mizz Fortune "Well now I see youâre not just a charming degenerate, youâre a sentimental one. I can tell you, youâre not wrong about the lonely part. But don't let it go to that big ol' ego of yours. Thatâs not exactly an exclusive club, Doc. This business chews us up, spits us out, and laughs while we limp away but it's more the rules of life. But here we are. You, with your gravelly charm and beer stained wisdom and me, well..."
She gestures to herself with a dramatic wave of her hand, paint chipping on her fingertips.
Mizz Fortune
"Me, just a hungover harlequin looking for attention."
Her tone softens slightly, and for a brief moment, she looks out the window.
Mizz Fortune
"But maybe youâre onto something. Maybe a friend wouldnât hurt. Someone who knows what itâs like to scrape by in a world full of fake smiles and cheap pop songs. Someone who isnât scared to say what they mean."
She shifts back in her seat, her grin returning, this time softer but no less flirtatious.
Mizz Fortune "But donât think this means youâve got me all figured out, Doc. I might be different, but Iâm still a little crazy. Comes with the territory."

Doc Hammer: Honey, I ain't even got my damn self fully figured out yet ...
He says with a crooked smile, glancing up as the waitress arrives with their coffee. He nods pleasantly then picks up the cup, giving it a sniff before taking a quick sip. It may be odd but it was force of habit at this point.
Doc Hammer: Go ahead an order whatever ya like. I'm payin' ... and a decent meal wouldn't hurt.
A reference more to the amount the two of them seemed to drink than anything else. Then again, he wasn't averse to bigger women either.
Doc Hammer: So, it dawns on me ... and I'm a little embarrassed by this, but I figure we been honest with each other up to this point, right? So, uhh ... you actually got a first name? Somethin' besides 'Mizz' anyway?

Mizz Fortune arches an elegant brow at Doc Hammer, a sly smile curving her lips as she gently swirls the coffee in her cup, watching the steam curl upwards. Mizz Fortune "Oh, I do, darling. Youâre not the first to wonder if I came out of the womb with a stage name. Anastasia...Anastasia Cel Tradat, bit of a mouthful, isnât it? My parents had flair, if nothing else."
She leans back slightly, her tone light but deliberate, like sheâs unwrapping a secret for only him to hear.
Mizz Fortune "But letâs not get too sentimental about that, hmm? Anastasia mightâve been my name once, but Mizz Fortune? Sheâs who I chose to be. And believe me, Hammer. thereâs a difference. Now, since youâre playing the gentleman and picking up the tab, Iâll have the French Toast, extra syrup. Lifeâs too short for bland breakfasts, donât you think?"
Her gaze slides back to him, sharp but playful, as she props her chin on one hand.
Mizz Fortune "Now that Iâve spilled my little truth, Hammer, what about you? Got any hidden gems rattling around in that mysterious head of yours?"

The old man nods at her selection, taking a sec to eye the menu himself.
Doc Hammer: Anastasia, huh? That's a sexy handle right there but one lil' secret deserves another ... parents named me Ray. It's after my Grandfather, one of the poor bastards who never came home from the Navy way back when.
His eyes settle on the special of the day, quietly choosing that one to eat.
Doc Hammer: Guess that's why I ended up in the Army when I did. Wanted to make the family proud and all that. Eh.

Mizz Fortuneâs lips curl into a wry smile, her dark eyes glinting with intrigue as she leans back slightly in her chair, swirling her drink idly.
Mizz Fortune "Ray, is it? A strong, no-nonsense name. Fitting, considering the man who wears it." She pauses, taking a slow sip of her coffee, the rim of the glass briefly hiding her expression.
Mizz Fortune "Family legacy is a powerful thing, isnât it? Drives us to make choices, to walk paths we might not have otherwise. Though, if you ask me, you can either sink or drown with your moniker, and it seems you're swimming just fine. Still, the Army, huh? Did it live up to those lofty ideals? Make the family proud?"

Hammer shrugs lightly, looking down at his coffee for a moment before he takes a sip.
Doc Hammer: I like to think so. Old timer passed away while I was away from home. He got to see me in uniform at least once though, never saw somebody actually look happier than he did that day. So, I guess it was worth it in that sense ...
He wasn't too comfortable with the topic. He hadn't shared that much about his family with very many people. No one from the company.
Doc Hammer: Jaded me a little bit. Seein' all the other guys out chasin' broads got me thinkin' it could help me snag one of them 'vixens' at some point, but apparently that wasn't in the cards for me. Still, kept me from a worse path I suppose.
